Early in the fight against opioids, Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck says law enforcement made an important discovery. “The addiction is so strong that someone would go purchase the drug and they wanted to use it quickly. They didn’t want to take all the time to drive back to wherever they came from, so they were stopping by local businesses,” Streck said.”

“That’s where we go. We go to those gas stations, we go to those restaurants, to those fast food joints. That’s what we look for, for that bathroom or that booth,” Harris said.

Her routine as an addict had become normal. She was living in Middletown but came to Dayton regularly for drugs. One day, she shot up in a gas station bathroom with a friend and something different happened.

She was overdosing.

“I remember her looking at me and saying ‘Are you Ok?’ and I couldn’t say anything. All I could do is shake my head,” Harris said.

Suddenly, her life was hanging in the balance.

Jamie Lee Curtis has opened up about her battle with drug addiction and the effect it had on her relationship with her family. In an interview with Variety for its “Recovery Issue”, the Halloween actor discussed everything from how she became addicted to painkillers after a plastic surgery procedure to her continued efforts to stay sober and how she once took drugs alongside her movie star father, Tony Curtis.

The 60-year-old stated that addiction runs in her family, revealing that her brother, Nicholas, died of a heroin overdose when he was 21-year-old, and that her father also struggled.

“I knew my dad had an issue because I had an issue and he and I shared drugs,” Curtis said.

“There was a period of time where I was the only child that was talking to him. I did cocaine and freebased once with my dad. But that was the only time I did that, and I did that with him.”

Indivior revenue falls as opioid addiction drug’s market share plummets

Opioid addiction is one of the major problems that need an immediate solution as more and more people are getting addicted to it. However, things seem to be getting more difficult as even the makers of the treatment are facing their own problems. Indivior Plc (INDV.L) reported a 19% slump in third-quarter revenue on Thursday as the British drug maker’s best-selling opioid addiction treatment lost more than half of its market share to cheaper generic rivals in the United States.

The company’s shares were down 6.5% after profit also fell by double-digits percentage. The stock has lost nearly two-thirds of its value this year as the London-listed firm faces competition from copycat drugs as well as a $3 billion U.S. fine for illegal marketing practices related to Suboxone. The company, which gets the bulk of its sales from the United States, had gained from the government’s stepped-up efforts to combat an opioid epidemic.

Indivior has said it will “vigorously defend itself” against the U.S. charges, adding that even if it is unable to reach a settlement, the indictment is not likely to hit operations over the next 12 months.

The company backed its annual revenue and profit forecasts from earlier this month when it had raised them on a slower-than-expected erosion in Suboxone’s market share.

Drug addiction services struggling with rising demand, say providers

Drug addiction is an acknowledged serious problem. It is serious in the sense that it can cost the lives of many people. As a result of this, there have been so many drug addiction services available to help those who are addicted to drugs. But the sad part is, they are now struggling to cope with the rising demand and are at risk of closure due to a lack of funding, service operators have said.

“The increase in crack cocaine is visible in most pubs and the dealing that is going on, you’re able to see it. Mexico reveals plan to fight drug addiction

The fight against addiction is never-ending. It has been ongoing for so many years now. So many lives have been broken and there are those that have been restored as well. But one thing is for sure, that the problem still exists and the best measures to solve it are yet to be made. Just like what the Mexican government is doing right now.

The Mexican government announced Tuesday that it is ramping up efforts to fight drug addiction. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador laid out his plan to fight substance use that centers around prevention, starting with youth. “We are going to dedicate all of the resources of the state … in order to make sure that all of the youth are informed about this matter,” Lopez Obrador said in a news conference.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making sure young people have access to education, work and good salaries. Well-being, he said, will help counter increased levels of addiction.

As part of the plan, the government will only distribute messages about the new program against addiction. The president did not mention for how long the messaging campaign will last.

“I have given the command that for a while we are not going to transmit messages about what we’re doing in the government other than the campaign against addiction,” said Lopez Obrador. “This is what you will hear and see on the radio, on television and newspapers. Only this for a while.”

While the campaign to inform youth about the harm of drugs is the first step, Lopez Obrador said the government has not ruled out other methods of possibly decreasing addiction, including legalizing some drugs like marijuana.

New Program Aims To Help People Suffering From Drug And Alcohol Addiction

Beating drug addiction is getting more difficult each day. This is without mentioning the increasing numbers of people getting addicted to drugs. This had led the Springfield Police Department and the Gateway Foundation launched a program Thursday meant to offer immediate help to people with drug and alcohol addiction.

The Safe Passage Initiative will allow any person to enter the city’s police headquarters or approach an on-duty Springfield police officer and ask for help. A screening process determines if a person is a good candidate for the program. If admitted, those who are in possession of drugs would not be charged.

Springfield Police Chief Kenny Winslow said the department ran a pilot program in early September—with one participant recently completing a 28-day treatment program and another still in it.

“This is not a get-soft-on-crime initiative. This is not for people who are under arrest for another charge. It’s a realization that addiction affects people of all backgrounds and all socioeconomics.”

Winslow said the initiative is also not for registered sex offenders or for someone who already has three or more drug-related convictions, among other criteria. He said the plan is another way to cut down on crime and unnecessary arrests.

Jonathan Van Ness reveals HIV diagnosis, former drug addiction

So many people have had their own share of drug addiction. There are those who sought help for it, but for others, it took them a long time to admit that they were once addicted to drugs. Just like Jonathan Van Ness of “Queer Eye” is getting vulnerable in his new memoir “Over the Top.”

In a preview of his book with the New York Times, Van Ness opened up about his early struggles with sex and drug addiction as well as his experience with sexual assault, revealing that he was abused by an older boy from his childhood church. “For a lot of people who are survivors of sexual assault at a young age, we have a lot of compounded trauma,” he said.

That trauma, Van Ness revealed, led to a series of other “self-destructive” behaviors, including spending hours in AOL chat rooms, which he used to meet up with older men for sex in his teens. Later on, Van Ness started college at the University of Arizona in Tucson where he began doing cocaine. And after spending his monthly allowance on the drug, he began advertising sex for more money. Soon after, he flunked out of college.

Van Ness then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a hairstylist, where he was introduced to methamphetamine, resulting in two rehab trips and two relapses. It wasn’t until he fainted while working in a salon that he “cleaned up” his act. The day after he fainted, Van Ness revealed, he went to Planned Parenthood where he tested positive for H.I.V.

Company Will Test Psychedelic for Treatment of Opioid Addiction

Opioid addiction is a major problem for a long time now. Although there have been numerous initiatives to end the problem, the process is still ongoing. Still, so many people are suffering from the effects of the drug. This means that more intensive efforts should be done and implemented. In Toronto, a company is looking to have an impact on the treatment of opioid addiction by exploring the potential of psychedelics, an area of study that to this point has seen more intense activity in the mental health field.

Mind Medicine Inc. (Mindmed) announced this week that it has acquired the drug development program for 18-MC (18-methoxycoronaridine), a synthetic derivative of the psychedelic drug ibogaine. The company is preparing 18-MC for a Phase II clinical trial examining its effects in the treatment of opioid use disorder.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) had funded the 18-MC drug development program for the previous owner, Savant HWP Inc., in 2012, with that leading to one clinical trail of the drug.

Researchers developed 18-MC in 1996 to mitigate the hallucinogenic effects of ibogaine while maintaining its therapeutic properties. Mindmed officials said this week that they also intend to address addiction by developing new versions of other psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin.

There have been inroads in understanding the potential role of psychedelics in mental health treatment, although a recent literature review suggested that better-designed studies are needed to give a full assessment of psychedelics’ potential.

Candlelight vigil helps raise awareness about growing problem of addiction in Gloucester County

Drug addiction is a growing problem across the world. It has been affecting the lives of countless people. The effects and consequences of addiction are so dangerous that it can even take one’s life. Due to this, efforts are made to raise awareness and put an end to this problem. In Gloucester County, Candlelight vigil helps raise awareness about the growing problem of addiction in Gloucester County.

Family and friends gathered at James G. Atkins Park on Tuesday to honor loved ones at the fourth annual Candlelight Vigil to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. The park was a sea of purple, the color which is used to symbolize Overdose Awareness. This event was created by the Gloucester County Freeholders along with the Gloucester County Addictions Task Force and included representatives from area hospitals, recovery housing services and grief counselors talking about services they can provide.

“I read an article about the heroin overdose problem in Monroe Township, specifically how it was around 25 times the national average,” said Freeholder Jim Jefferson. “After that, we decided we had to so more to help people. So, we just called together people from all walks of life to try and address all the different ways this touches Gloucester County.”

The vigil brought together people who have been affected by addiction so they could find help or support through those going through the same situation or through resources they might not be able to find on their own.

Drug deaths in England and Wales at highest level since records began, figures show

The most unfortunate thing that could happen as a result of drug addiction would be death- the lost lives. But in spite of so many cases of drug-related deaths, it is a sad reality that still, so many people choose to use drugs and put their lives in danger. In fact, drug deaths in England and Wales are at their highest level since record began.

Drug deaths in England and Wales have hit a record high, with around 56 people now dying every week from illicit substances, new figures show. Ministers have been accused of “clinging to their failing policies on drugs” after data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed there were 4,359 deaths related to drug poisoning last year, the highest number since records began in 1993.

Campaigners said the rising rates were “avoidable” and accused ministers of taking an approach that was too focused on law enforcement, while also presiding over cuts to local authority budgets which they said undermined the ability to deliver effective drug treatment services.

The Independent revealed last month that the number of live-in drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in England had fallen by a third in six years, prompting concerns that as budgets fall, councils are sending fewer people to lifesaving residential rehabilitation centres.

Drug crackdown launched in notorious San Francisco district

Rampant drug use is everywhere. In fact, drugs are one of the most pressing problems that the world faces at this present time. Seventeen federal law enforcement agencies are teaming up for a yearlong crackdown on a notorious area of San Francisco crawling with rampant drug use and “smothered by lawlessness,” a federal prosecutor said Wednesday. The government is arresting drug traffickers in the Tenderloin neighbourhood, near the city’s downtown, as the first step in cleaning up a roughly 50-block area long plagued by poverty and where open drug use has been tolerated for years, U.S. Attorney David Anderson said.

The crackdown comes as California has become more tolerant of casual drug use after voters reduced penalties for possession of cocaine, heroin and opiates in 2014 and legalized marijuana in 2016. But San Francisco also strongly opposes federal immigration sweeps, and immigration agents are among those joining the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service and others in the effort. So many people are struggling with drug addiction. But they are not the only ones suffering. Their loved ones suffer as well. At the same time, the negative effects of drug impact the society as it could lead to different crimes and other negative things. But life does not end here. There is always hope for everyone, even for those who have been dependent on drugs.

Here is a story of a changed man, someone who has been addicted to drugs and is now leading a good life. For many struggling with addiction, it can feel like there’s no way out. But as we continue our series on the opioid crisis, we hear one man’s story on how he beat his dependence. Now he uses his experience to save others. Sean Gorda is a case manager at Lane County’s Methadone Clinic in Eugene, helping people with addictions on the path to sobriety. It’s a struggle he can relate to.

At 14, he had a major surgery, and when he received morphine to deal with the pain, it changed his life forever.

“It was like a light came on in my brain,” said Gorda. “And it was like this sort of makes me feel okay”

Sean developed an addiction to painkillers, taking everything from hydrocodone to fentanyl, and eventually heroin. He says his life became a struggle against withdrawal.

“It’s kind of like the worst flu you had in your life,” he said. “And knowing that 20, 20 bucks, 50 bucks is going to fix it.”

Muskegon man using his addiction story to help others

It takes so much to solve the problem with drugs. This is the kind of problem that will be over with just one solution. Also, it is a must to find out the root and put an end to it. Although there are a lot of drug addiction treatment centers available today, this seems to be not enough as the number of people getting addicted to drugs keeps going one. But if there is one thing that can greatly help with the problem and hopefully lessen the number of drug addicts, it would be hearing stories from those who have experienced it.

A Muskegon man who spent years dealing with an addiction to prescription medication is hoping sharing his story will inspire other people who need help. Ken Start got addicted to prescription medications after he broke his back in a bad car crash. He was prescribed opiates, and from there, things got worse — and worse, and worse again. “The day was totally using the whole day. I lived to use,” Start said. He tried rehabs in West Michigan, and none of them had a program that stuck.

“It got to where I would go to doctors and manipulate doctors to giving me things I didn’t need,” Start said.

In a last attempt to save his life, he drove to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, who he credits with saving his life.

They got him through his pain, and his addiction.

Then he got hurt again. He needed another surgery, and he relapsed. He went back to Mayo, went through rehab again, and has been sober for nearly 12 years.

It’s all chronicled in his book “A Prescription for Addiction.”

Start says sharing his story is important, so he can hopefully help other addicts looking to recover. He is already starting to see results, as one of his readers ended up being someone he sponsored as part of a 12-step program.

Five babies who died in 2018 born to mothers affected by substance misuse

The cases of mother’s or pregnant women who are using drugs are greatly increasing. What is worse is the fact that many of these cases led to the death of the babies and this is all because of drug abuse. This is why supporting women who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction is very important. They need to receive all the help that they could get just to save their lives and those of their babies.

All but one of the babies known to child protection services and whose deaths were independently investigated last year had mothers affected by substance misuse, the chair of a review team has said. Chairwoman of the National Review Panel (NRP) Helen Buckley was speaking to The Irish Times on the publication of the 2018 NRP annual report. The NRP is independent of Tusla and consists of professionals from a range of disciplines. It investigates serious incidents including the deaths of children in care and known to the child protection system.

Ms. Buckley reiterated her call for a national drugs liaison midwife service to support pregnant women and mothers struggling with drug or alcohol addiction.

In all, 13 deaths of children in care or known to Tusla, were referred to the NRP last year – a decrease of nine on 2017. More than half the deaths were of children five years or younger. In all, six were babies under 12 months’ old and one was under five. Ten were girls and three were boys.

Of the six babies, four had been born to mothers who were using drugs during and/or after pregnancy and one mother was affected by alcohol abuse, Ms Buckley said. One baby died as a result of a fatal foetal abnormality. Five of the babies were girls.

Winnipeg woman wants to raise awareness after finding mother’s grave 55 years after her death

So many lives have been lost because of addiction. This does not only refer to the use and abuse of drugs but even of alcohol and other forms of addiction. It is so sad that those lives could have been saved if their addiction was attended to immediately or if they had asked for help. When it comes to addiction, awareness plays an important role.

Here is a woman from Winnipeg who is raising awareness after finding the grave of her mom. In 2018, Virginia Cook discovered where her mother was buried, 55 years after she passed away. Now, she wants to spread awareness on what she went through to help others going through a similar situation. “When I found my mom’s grave I wanted to do something because there was no grave, nothing. Just a marker to ID her,” says Cook. Cook’s family is originally from Shoal Lake #39.

She explains both of her parents were residential school survivors, an experience she felt they never fully recovered from.

“They had alcohol addiction. We did have a house in Shoal Lake, Ontario, but we didn’t stay there because they wanted to be close to alcohol, which is in Kenora, Ontario.”

Cook says she was 11 years old when her and her two younger sisters were first taken by children’s aide – which is known today as CFS.

She remembers returning home twice, but ended up in children’s aide for good by age 13, in 1961.

This was the last year she saw or spoke to her mother.

“I was heartbroken and grieving because I’m not with my parents, you know. I want to be with my parents, but I can’t.”

FDA proposes tighter opioid rules that would make new drugs less addictive

Opioid is a kind of drug that has been causing great problems across the world. So many people are getting addicted to it and this does not seem to end soon. Making this drug less addictive will definitely make a lot of difference to everyone. This is also why The Food and Drug Administration is proposing to tighten the rules for opioid manufacturers by requiring new drugs to be less addictive.

Acting FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless withdrew the agency’s previous guidance Thursday, laying out a tougher new regulatory framework for evaluating applications for new opioids coming to the U.S. market. Under the proposal, drugmakers would have to say whether their drug has “any characteristics that would mitigate the risks of overdose, abuse or the development of addiction.”

The opioid epidemic is a major issue for the Trump administration, which has vowed to crack down on illicit use. More than 130 people in the U.S. die every day from opioid overdoses, with about 47,000 people dying in 2017, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

UK ‘has secret cocaine addiction and drug is used everywhere’ – major study suggests

Experts say cocaine use in the UK is much greater than previously thought after thousands of drug users admitted taking the Class A drug on a regular basis, Sky News can exclusively reveal. Researchers at substance abuse charity Addaction say the UK has a secret cocaine addiction and the drug is being used “everywhere” in the UK. In the largest study of its kind, the experts found cannabis is used by almost 80% of drug users, while cocaine or crack cocaine is taken by 70%.

Cocaine is on the rise in Europe, EU drug agency says

Different types of drugs are becoming popular today. However, this popularity is not a good thing. Instead, this can be a threat to the lives of the people. This could mean that more lives will be put in danger and perhaps, the number of drug-addicted people will be on the rise once again. This would call for more addiction treatment centers to help these people.

The European Union agency that monitors illicit drug use says cocaine is becoming more widely available on the continent. The European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction said in a report on Thursday that social media, the darknet and encryption are helping small gangs and individuals to sell drugs undetected.

The agency says authorities have identified “cocaine call centers” which use couriers providing quick and adaptable delivery networks.

The Lisbon-based agency says authorities are fighting back, with the amount of cocaine seized in Europe setting records. In 2017, the latest with full-year data available, authorities seized more than 140 metric tons of cocaine. That was almost double the quantity seized the previous year.

Despite the growth of cocaine, cannabis remains the most widely used illicit drug in Europe.
