Tackling drug addiction: Myanmar ethnic group steps up fight

Perhaps one of the most tackled topics across the world is drug addiction. For so many years now, everyone seems to be trying to figure out the best way to end this problem. So many lives have been lost due to addiction, but surprisingly, despite this, still so many people use and abuse drugs. In Myanmar, an ethnic group is stepping up their fight against addiction.

A rebel group in one of Myanmar’s main drug-growing areas is making its move to tackle and combat drug addiction.

Governments in Southeast Asia say more regional cooperation is needed to tackle a growing drug problem. Much of the methamphetamine and opium comes from Myanmar, where armed groups use drug money to fund their wars against the government. But as Wayne Hay reports, one of those armies says it is anti-drugs and is stepping up its fight against addiction.

Jamie Lee Curtis Reveals She Once Shared Drugs with Her Father

People who are or were once addicted to drugs have their own battles. There are those who never expected that they will be so addicted to the substance while others deliberately wanted it to happen as a form of escape from reality. A drug-addicted person can give hundreds of reasons to justify what he or she has done. This is often found out from people who decided to open up about the issue. Jamie Lee Curtis is also having a big revelation.

Jamie Lee Curtis has opened up about her battle with drug addiction and the effect it had on her relationship with her family. In an interview with Variety for its “Recovery Issue”, the Halloween actor discussed everything from how she became addicted to painkillers after a plastic surgery procedure to her continued efforts to stay sober and how she once took drugs alongside her movie star father, Tony Curtis.

For more information, click here.

The 60-year-old stated that addiction runs in her family, revealing that her brother, Nicholas, died of a heroin overdose when he was 21-year-old, and that her father also struggled.

“I knew my dad had an issue because I had an issue and he and I shared drugs,” Curtis said.

“There was a period of time where I was the only child that was talking to him. I did cocaine and freebased once with my dad. But that was the only time I did that, and I did that with him.”

Indivior revenue falls as opioid addiction drug’s market share plummets

Opioid addiction is one of the major problems that need an immediate solution as more and more people are getting addicted to it. However, things seem to be getting more difficult as even the makers of the treatment are facing their own problems. Indivior Plc (INDV.L) reported a 19% slump in third-quarter revenue on Thursday as the British drug maker’s best-selling opioid addiction treatment lost more than half of its market share to cheaper generic rivals in the United States.

The company’s shares were down 6.5% after profit also fell by double-digits percentage. The stock has lost nearly two-thirds of its value this year as the London-listed firm faces competition from copycat drugs as well as a $3 billion U.S. fine for illegal marketing practices related to Suboxone. The company, which gets the bulk of its sales from the United States, had gained from the government’s stepped-up efforts to combat an opioid epidemic.

Read more here.

Indivior has said it will “vigorously defend itself” against the U.S. charges, adding that even if it is unable to reach a settlement, the indictment is not likely to hit operations over the next 12 months.

The company backed its annual revenue and profit forecasts from earlier this month when it had raised them on a slower-than-expected erosion in Suboxone’s market share.

Drug addiction services struggling with rising demand, say providers

Drug addiction is an acknowledged serious problem. It is serious in the sense that it can cost the lives of many people. As a result of this, there have been so many drug addiction services available to help those who are addicted to drugs. But the sad part is, they are now struggling to cope with the rising demand and are at risk of closure due to a lack of funding, service operators have said.

Speaking at a gathering organised by Citywide, a drug crisis campaign which called on more urgent Government action to tackle substance misuse, workers from drug services all over the country said the prevalence of illegal substances has now reached unprecedented levels.

Susan Collins, managing director of Addiction Response Crumlin, said that the availability and accessibility of substances have changed with the advent of technology.

“The increase in crack cocaine is visible in most pubs and the dealing that is going on, you’re able to see it. There are young people who are being groomed to sell drugs,” she said. “Although it was quick to get drugs a few years ago, nowadays it’s on your doorstep before you even get down to the shops.”

Mexico reveals plan to fight drug addiction

The fight against addiction is never-ending. It has been ongoing for so many years now. So many lives have been broken and there are those that have been restored as well. But one thing is for sure, that the problem still exists and the best measures to solve it are yet to be made. Just like what the Mexican government is doing right now.

Mexico reveals plan to fight drug addictionThe Mexican government announced Tuesday that it is ramping up efforts to fight drug addiction. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador laid out his plan to fight substance use that centers around prevention, starting with youth. “We are going to dedicate all of the resources of the state … in order to make sure that all of the youth are informed about this matter,” Lopez Obrador said in a news conference.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making sure young people have access to education, work and good salaries. Well-being, he said, will help counter increased levels of addiction.

As part of the plan, the government will only distribute messages about the new program against addiction. The president did not mention for how long the messaging campaign will last.

“I have given the command that for a while we are not going to transmit messages about what we’re doing in the government other than the campaign against addiction,” said Lopez Obrador. “This is what you will hear and see on the radio, on television and newspapers. Only this for a while.”

While the campaign to inform youth about the harm of drugs is the first step, Lopez Obrador said the government has not ruled out other methods of possibly decreasing addiction, including legalizing some drugs like marijuana.

New Program Aims To Help People Suffering From Drug And Alcohol Addiction

Beating drug addiction is getting more difficult each day. This is without mentioning the increasing numbers of people getting addicted to drugs. This had led the Springfield Police Department and the Gateway Foundation launched a program Thursday meant to offer immediate help to people with drug and alcohol addiction.

The Safe Passage Initiative will allow any person to enter the city’s police headquarters or approach an on-duty Springfield police officer and ask for help. A screening process determines if a person is a good candidate for the program. If admitted, those who are in possession of drugs would not be charged.

Springfield Police Chief Kenny Winslow said the department ran a pilot program in early September—with one participant recently completing a 28-day treatment program and another still in it.

“This is not a get-soft-on-crime initiative. This is not for people who are under arrest for another charge. It’s a realization that addiction affects people of all backgrounds and all socioeconomics.”

Winslow said the initiative is also not for registered sex offenders or for someone who already has three or more drug-related convictions, among other criteria. He said the plan is another way to cut down on crime and unnecessary arrests.

Jonathan Van Ness reveals HIV diagnosis, former drug addiction

So many people have had their own share of drug addiction. There are those who sought help for it, but for others, it took them a long time to admit that they were once addicted to drugs. Just like Jonathan Van Ness of “Queer Eye” is getting vulnerable in his new memoir “Over the Top.”

In a preview of his book with the New York Times, Van Ness opened up about his early struggles with sex and drug addiction as well as his experience with sexual assault, revealing that he was abused by an older boy from his childhood church. “For a lot of people who are survivors of sexual assault at a young age, we have a lot of compounded trauma,” he said.

That trauma, Van Ness revealed, led to a series of other “self-destructive” behaviors, including spending hours in AOL chat rooms, which he used to meet up with older men for sex in his teens. Later on, Van Ness started college at the University of Arizona in Tucson where he began doing cocaine. And after spending his monthly allowance on the drug, he began advertising sex for more money. Soon after, he flunked out of college.

Van Ness then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a hairstylist, where he was introduced to methamphetamine, resulting in two rehab trips and two relapses. It wasn’t until he fainted while working in a salon that he “cleaned up” his act. The day after he fainted, Van Ness revealed, he went to Planned Parenthood where he tested positive for H.I.V.

Company Will Test Psychedelic for Treatment of Opioid Addiction

Opioid addiction is a major problem for a long time now. Although there have been numerous initiatives to end the problem, the process is still ongoing. Still, so many people are suffering from the effects of the drug. This means that more intensive efforts should be done and implemented. In Toronto, a company is looking to have an impact on the treatment of opioid addiction by exploring the potential of psychedelics, an area of study that to this point has seen more intense activity in the mental health field.

Mind Medicine Inc. (Mindmed) announced this week that it has acquired the drug development program for 18-MC (18-methoxycoronaridine), a synthetic derivative of the psychedelic drug ibogaine. The company is preparing 18-MC for a Phase II clinical trial examining its effects in the treatment of opioid use disorder.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) had funded the 18-MC drug development program for the previous owner, Savant HWP Inc., in 2012, with that leading to one clinical trail of the drug.

Researchers developed 18-MC in 1996 to mitigate the hallucinogenic effects of ibogaine while maintaining its therapeutic properties. Mindmed officials said this week that they also intend to address addiction by developing new versions of other psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin.

There have been inroads in understanding the potential role of psychedelics in mental health treatment, although a recent literature review suggested that better-designed studies are needed to give a full assessment of psychedelics’ potential.

Candlelight vigil helps raise awareness about growing problem of addiction in Gloucester County

Drug addiction is a growing problem across the world. It has been affecting the lives of countless people. The effects and consequences of addiction are so dangerous that it can even take one’s life. Due to this, efforts are made to raise awareness and put an end to this problem. In Gloucester County, Candlelight vigil helps raise awareness about the growing problem of addiction in Gloucester County.

Family and friends gathered at James G. Atkins Park on Tuesday to honor loved ones at the fourth annual Candlelight Vigil to recognize International Overdose Awareness Day. The park was a sea of purple, the color which is used to symbolize Overdose Awareness. This event was created by the Gloucester County Freeholders along with the Gloucester County Addictions Task Force and included representatives from area hospitals, recovery housing services and grief counselors talking about services they can provide.

“I read an article about the heroin overdose problem in Monroe Township, specifically how it was around 25 times the national average,” said Freeholder Jim Jefferson. “After that, we decided we had to so more to help people. So, we just called together people from all walks of life to try and address all the different ways this touches Gloucester County.”

The vigil brought together people who have been affected by addiction so they could find help or support through those going through the same situation or through resources they might not be able to find on their own.

Drug deaths in England and Wales at highest level since records began, figures show

The most unfortunate thing that could happen as a result of drug addiction would be death- the lost lives. But in spite of so many cases of drug-related deaths, it is a sad reality that still, so many people choose to use drugs and put their lives in danger. In fact, drug deaths in England and Wales are at their highest level since record began.

Drug deaths in England and WalesDrug deaths in England and Wales have hit a record high, with around 56 people now dying every week from illicit substances, new figures show. Ministers have been accused of “clinging to their failing policies on drugs” after data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed there were 4,359 deaths related to drug poisoning last year, the highest number since records began in 1993.

Campaigners said the rising rates were “avoidable” and accused ministers of taking an approach that was too focused on law enforcement, while also presiding over cuts to local authority budgets which they said undermined the ability to deliver effective drug treatment services.

The Independent revealed last month that the number of live-in drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in England had fallen by a third in six years, prompting concerns that as budgets fall, councils are sending fewer people to lifesaving residential rehabilitation centres.

Drug crackdown launched in notorious San Francisco district

Rampant drug use is everywhere. In fact, drugs are one of the most pressing problems that the world faces at this present time. With this, it is very important to strengthen efforts to put an end to this problem. In San Francisco, just like in other parts of the world, they too are trying their best to solve their drug problem and to save more lives from ending as victims.

Seventeen federal law enforcement agencies are teaming up for a yearlong crackdown on a notorious area of San Francisco crawling with rampant drug use and “smothered by lawlessness,” a federal prosecutor said Wednesday. The government is arresting drug traffickers in the Tenderloin neighbourhood, near the city’s downtown, as the first step in cleaning up a roughly 50-block area long plagued by poverty and where open drug use has been tolerated for years, U.S. Attorney David Anderson said.

Click the link to read more.

The crackdown comes as California has become more tolerant of casual drug use after voters reduced penalties for possession of cocaine, heroin and opiates in 2014 and legalized marijuana in 2016. It also comes as San Francisco Mayor London Breed and the elected supervisor for the area have pledged to target flagrant drug dealing.

But San Francisco also strongly opposes federal immigration sweeps, and immigration agents are among those joining the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Marshals Service and others in the effort. And while city officials know the Tenderloin is a problem, they’re torn on how to address drug dealing and drug addiction, with some saying the city shouldn’t waste resources going after low-level offenders and criminalizing homelessness.

The 25 most dangerous drugs

Opioids are among the most powerful drugs. Powerful in a sense that it has a lot of negative effects to whoever chooses to use it, more so to those who have been addicted to it. The epidemic continues to affect people across the world. In fact, nearly 70,000 Americans died from a drug overdose last year, according to data released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The 25 most dangerous drugsWhile prescription painkillers and other street and illicit drugs have certainly fueled the rise in opioid deaths, they are not the only dangerous drugs. Many other drugs, including some seemingly innocuous over-the-counter medications, can be dangerous. The opioid epidemic is on this list of the most serious public health issues facing America today. Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. More Americans die of drug overdoses than in car accidents, which are also frequently the result of substance abuse – nearly half of fatal car accidents involve alcohol or other substances.

To better understand the likelihood of Americans dying from using a specific substance, it is important to also get a better understanding of the substance itself – its properties, interactions with other drugs and alcohol, and how often it is used.

The vast majority of people who drink alcohol in the United States – more than half of Americans – do so responsibly. Millions of people also use pain medication every day and do not stray from their prescribed dosage. And while overdoses from prescription opioids are a major factor in the opioid epidemic, opioids are essential to many Americans who rely on them to function.

From addiction to career; one man’s story of his battle with opiods

So many people are struggling with drug addiction. But they are not the only ones suffering. Their loved ones suffer as well. At the same time, the negative effects of drug impact the society as it could lead to different crimes and other negative things. But life does not end here. There is always hope for everyone, even for those who have been dependent on drugs.

battle with opiodsHere is a story of a changed man, someone who has been addicted to drugs and is now leading a good life. For many struggling with addiction, it can feel like there’s no way out. But as we continue our series on the opioid crisis, we hear one man’s story on how he beat his dependence. Now he uses his experience to save others. Sean Gorda is a case manager at Lane County’s Methadone Clinic in Eugene, helping people with addictions on the path to sobriety. It’s a struggle he can relate to.

At 14, he had a major surgery, and when he received morphine to deal with the pain, it changed his life forever.

“It was like a light came on in my brain,” said Gorda. “And it was like this sort of makes me feel okay”

Sean developed an addiction to painkillers, taking everything from hydrocodone to fentanyl, and eventually heroin. He says his life became a struggle against withdrawal.

“It’s kind of like the worst flu you had in your life,” he said. “And knowing that 20, 20 bucks, 50 bucks is going to fix it.”

Muskegon man using his addiction story to help others

It takes so much to solve the problem with drugs. This is the kind of problem that will be over with just one solution. Also, it is a must to find out the root and put an end to it. Although there are a lot of drug addiction treatment centers available today, this seems to be not enough as the number of people getting addicted to drugs keeps going one. But if there is one thing that can greatly help with the problem and hopefully lessen the number of drug addicts, it would be hearing stories from those who have experienced it.

Muskegon man using his addiction story to help othersA Muskegon man who spent years dealing with an addiction to prescription medication is hoping sharing his story will inspire other people who need help. Ken Start got addicted to prescription medications after he broke his back in a bad car crash. He was prescribed opiates, and from there, things got worse — and worse, and worse again. “The day was totally using the whole day. I lived to use,” Start said. He tried rehabs in West Michigan, and none of them had a program that stuck.

Click the link for more information.

“It got to where I would go to doctors and manipulate doctors to giving me things I didn’t need,” Start said.

In a last attempt to save his life, he drove to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, who he credits with saving his life.

They got him through his pain, and his addiction.

Then he got hurt again. He needed another surgery, and he relapsed. He went back to Mayo, went through rehab again, and has been sober for nearly 12 years.

It’s all chronicled in his book “A Prescription for Addiction.”

Start says sharing his story is important, so he can hopefully help other addicts looking to recover. He is already starting to see results, as one of his readers ended up being someone he sponsored as part of a 12-step program.

Five babies who died in 2018 born to mothers affected by substance misuse

The cases of mother’s or pregnant women who are using drugs are greatly increasing. What is worse is the fact that many of these cases led to the death of the babies and this is all because of drug abuse. This is why supporting women who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction is very important. They need to receive all the help that they could get just to save their lives and those of their babies.

Five babies who died in 2018 born to mothers affected by substance misuseAll but one of the babies known to child protection services and whose deaths were independently investigated last year had mothers affected by substance misuse, the chair of a review team has said. Chairwoman of the National Review Panel (NRP) Helen Buckley was speaking to The Irish Times on the publication of the 2018 NRP annual report. The NRP is independent of Tusla and consists of professionals from a range of disciplines. It investigates serious incidents including the deaths of children in care and known to the child protection system.

Read more by clicking here.

Ms. Buckley reiterated her call for a national drugs liaison midwife service to support pregnant women and mothers struggling with drug or alcohol addiction.

In all, 13 deaths of children in care or known to Tusla, were referred to the NRP last year – a decrease of nine on 2017. More than half the deaths were of children five years or younger. In all, six were babies under 12 months’ old and one was under five. Ten were girls and three were boys.

Of the six babies, four had been born to mothers who were using drugs during and/or after pregnancy and one mother was affected by alcohol abuse, Ms Buckley said. One baby died as a result of a fatal foetal abnormality. Five of the babies were girls.

Winnipeg woman wants to raise awareness after finding mother’s grave 55 years after her death

So many lives have been lost because of addiction. This does not only refer to the use and abuse of drugs but even of alcohol and other forms of addiction. It is so sad that those lives could have been saved if their addiction was attended to immediately or if they had asked for help. When it comes to addiction, awareness plays an important role.

Winnipeg woman wants to raise awarenessHere is a woman from Winnipeg who is raising awareness after finding the grave of her mom. In 2018, Virginia Cook discovered where her mother was buried, 55 years after she passed away. Now, she wants to spread awareness on what she went through to help others going through a similar situation. “When I found my mom’s grave I wanted to do something because there was no grave, nothing. Just a marker to ID her,” says Cook. Cook’s family is originally from Shoal Lake #39.

She explains both of her parents were residential school survivors, an experience she felt they never fully recovered from.

“They had alcohol addiction. We did have a house in Shoal Lake, Ontario, but we didn’t stay there because they wanted to be close to alcohol, which is in Kenora, Ontario.”

Cook says she was 11 years old when her and her two younger sisters were first taken by children’s aide – which is known today as CFS.

She remembers returning home twice, but ended up in children’s aide for good by age 13, in 1961.

This was the last year she saw or spoke to her mother.

“I was heartbroken and grieving because I’m not with my parents, you know. I want to be with my parents, but I can’t.”

FDA proposes tighter opioid rules that would make new drugs less addictive

Opioid is a kind of drug that has been causing great problems across the world. So many people are getting addicted to it and this does not seem to end soon. Making this drug less addictive will definitely make a lot of difference to everyone. This is also why The Food and Drug Administration is proposing to tighten the rules for opioid manufacturers by requiring new drugs to be less addictive.

FDA proposes tighter opioid rulesActing FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless withdrew the agency’s previous guidance Thursday, laying out a tougher new regulatory framework for evaluating applications for new opioids coming to the U.S. market. Under the proposal, drugmakers would have to say whether their drug has “any characteristics that would mitigate the risks of overdose, abuse or the development of addiction.”

“Companies should also indicate whether their drugs have novel or greater risks compared to other opioids on the market and also note the public health implications of their products in terms of risks to non-patients, including members of the patient’s household, visiting relatives, friends and others,” the FDA said.

The opioid epidemic is a major issue for the Trump administration, which has vowed to crack down on illicit use. More than 130 people in the U.S. die every day from opioid overdoses, with about 47,000 people dying in 2017, according to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Cocaine is on the rise in Europe, EU drug agency says

Different types of drugs are becoming popular today. However, this popularity is not a good thing. Instead, this can be a threat to the lives of the people. This could mean that more lives will be put in danger and perhaps, the number of drug-addicted people will be on the rise once again. This would call for more addiction treatment centers to help these people.

Cocaine is on the rise in Europe, EU drug agency saysThe European Union agency that monitors illicit drug use says cocaine is becoming more widely available on the continent. The European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction said in a report on Thursday that social media, the darknet and encryption are helping small gangs and individuals to sell drugs undetected.

The agency says authorities have identified “cocaine call centers” which use couriers providing quick and adaptable delivery networks.

The Lisbon-based agency says authorities are fighting back, with the amount of cocaine seized in Europe setting records. In 2017, the latest with full-year data available, authorities seized more than 140 metric tons of cocaine. That was almost double the quantity seized the previous year.

Despite the growth of cocaine, cannabis remains the most widely used illicit drug in Europe.

Marietta police testing new opioid intervention program

Intervention is very important for drug-addicted people. The number of drug users keeps increasing each day, especially opioid users. This is becoming a serious problem that affects society. In order to save the users and others, seeking help and intervention is a must. In Metro Atlanta, a police department has announced a new opioid addiction intervention program as deaths from overdoses in Cobb County appear to be on the decline.

Marietta police testing new opioid intervention programThe Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the new program by Marietta police will create an alert system where authorities are notified when someone is revived using medication, like naloxone, that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Two plain clothes officers will then visit survivors and try to convince them to seek treatment. Officers will also receive training on how to best approach the sensitive conversations.

Marietta Police Chief Dan Flynn said the program arose from the success the department has had in using naloxone to combat overdose deaths. Between police, fire and ambulance services, naloxone was given 100 times in Marietta last year.

Flynn wants to expand on that success by figuring out how to engage with people after overdoses and break the cycle of addiction.

“Do we think we’re going to get some doors slammed in our face by people saying ‘You don’t have a warrant, get lost?’ Yeah,” Flynn said. “But some people will say, ‘I want to hear more.'”

The program will be judged by how many people police can persuade to enter treatment and will be evaluated after six months and again after a year.

Drug trafficker faces prison sentence

One reason why there are so many drug-addicted people in the world is because of the fact that there are also a lot of drug dealers and drug traffickers going around. Since people have access to illegal substances, they are likely to use them. When they get addicted to it, they commit different crimes and acts in a way that is against the law of society.

Drug trafficker faces prison sentenceA man who law enforcement officials have called the primary illicit drug supplier on the North Olympic Peninsula pleaded guilty in federal court this week and faces up to 20 years in prison. Nicolas “Nico” Orozco-Cruz, who was the head of a drug trafficking organization pleaded guilty Tuesday to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and in the plea agreement attorneys recommend he face 46 to 71 months in prison.

Orozco-Cruz, Elizabeth Ann McKean and Jessica Elen Christman were all arrested last year after a year-long Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team and Drug Enforcement Administration investigation into Orozco-Cruz’s drug trafficking organization, which officials believed was the primary supplier of Mexican-produced heroin and methamphetamine on the Olympic Peninsula.

Court papers say he was in the United States illegally.

Orozco-Cruz was indicted on charges of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, six counts of distribution of a controlled substance and alien in possession of a firearm.

Federal prosecutors have agreed to drop six distribution charges as part of the plea agreement.

Woman recovering from methamphetamine addiction says she used while giving birth

We know for a fact that not only men use and get addicted to drugs, but even women as well. Especially in this present time, the number of women abusing drugs is increasing and the worse part is, there are mothers who even use drugs. There are those who are pregnant but still, they decided to use them. Here is a woman who is recovering from methamphetamine addiction and admitted to using while giving birth.

Woman recovering from methamphetamine addictionA recovering methamphetamine addict says she was so hooked on the drug she even used while she was in labour. In an interview with NZME, as part of its series on New Zealand’s meth crisis, Darnell Rumbal said the addiction was “stronger than my will to stop”.

“With my youngest boy, even during pregnancy I used. I couldn’t stop using,” she told NZME.

“I went into labour six weeks early … When I went to the hospital and I was being monitored my friend turned up and had gear. I knew he had gear and even though I was in labour and even though I knew I was risking my child and I was in the hospital, I still said to him, have you got a puff? And he said yes, so we went into the toilets and I got high,” she told NZME.

Rumbal, of Bay of Plenty, is now more than a year clean.

Last year, the number of charges for the use and supply of methamphetamine hit at a 10-year high.

Would you recognize the signs of drug addiction in your child?

Anyone can be an addict. At times we can immediately determine if one is under drugs or not. In some cases, without our knowledge that someone close to us- friends or acquaintance, or even our child can be on drugs. When children are involved, it can be very alarming and parents should know about it before it’s too late.

Would you recognize the signs of drug addiction in your childBut if you are a parent, how would you know if your child is using drugs, or worse, addicted to it? A seminar happening Monday night in Huntsville is promising to give parents information they need to get their children to help if they become addicted to drugs or alcohol. Phil Plant, a recovery and intervention specialist based in Nashville, is hosting an event called Pushing Past Parental Paralysis.

“It is really hard to really admit, to say, ‘my child is using drugs’. You want it to be anything else. So parent paralysis is a parent’s inability to help a child, they don’t know what to do, so they’re stuck and they don’t do anything which can lead to enabling which can really make the disease prolonged.”

Plant named off the usual signs parents need to be aware of, but warns, if a parent is in denial, it may be hard to start getting them help. “It’s important to recognize that addiction is a family disease. It’s not just the addict that is struggling. It affects every family member. Self care, with the family, and not just a focus on the person who’s addicted.”

Several city health centers now equipped with prescription drug drop boxes

The abuse of prescription drugs is becoming a serious problem in many parts of the world. Also, there are a lot of people who do not exactly know how to properly dispose of their unneeded or expired prescription drugs. Given this, in Cincinnati, several of the city’s primary care centers are now equipped with prescription drug drop boxes, the health department announced Monday.

Several city health centers now equipped with prescription drug drop boxesHealth Commissioner Melba Moore said the boxes allow for a responsible means of disposing of unneeded or expired prescription drugs. “We believe that the easy access to the drug take-back boxes will be yet another drug abuse prevention measure to help curb the addiction crisis,” Moore said in a written statement.

The organization PreventionFIRST! worked with city officials to purchase the prescription drop boxes through a grant from the Ohio Department of Health.

“Many homes have unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications,” said Mary Haag, president and CEO of PreventionFIRST! “When these medicines are no longer needed, they should be disposed of promptly and safely to reduce the chance of someone accidentally or intentionally misusing these medications.”

Two rival politicians accused each other of using drugs

Drugs are everywhere. This also means that everyone talks about it and anyone can be involved in it. Whoever you are and regardless of your status in the society, you can be a victim of drugs or if not, you might be using them. Drugs can be in any setting, even in politics. Here are two rival politicians who are accusing each other of using drugs.

Two rival politicians accused each other of using drugsIt’s been described as a “political pissing contest” — literally. Two feuding politicians in Bridgeport, Connecticut’s largest city, spent much of the past week accusing each other of being on mind-altering substances after getting into an ugly fight in the comments section of a local political blog. Naturally, they could only settle their dispute one way: by challenging each other to a public drug test.

Click the link to read the story.

Calling it a “modern twist on the classic political duel,” the Connecticut Post reported on Monday that Bridgeport City Councilman Ernest Newton and Board of Education member Maria Pereira had both handed over plastic cups of urine and passed their respective tests.

As it turns out, they’re not the first ones to go through the humiliating ritual. Both front-runners in Ukraine’s presidential election submitted to live-streamed drug tests earlier this month, and the state of Georgia once made screenings mandatory for candidates running for state office.

Former drug addict helps others using his experience, yerba mate company

Addiction can turn life upside down. In most cases, people fall into destruction because of it. However, there are also those people who admit their addiction, yet they took the courage to seek help and get out of it. In fact, there are those who serve as an inspiration to others, setting as an example and helping them better understand the effects of drugs and how it can change one’s life.

Former drug addict helps others using his experienceFive years ago, Wes Hurt struggled with addictions to cocaine, opiates, and alcohol. Today, he runs a company that helps others recovering from addiction. In 2014, Hurt founded CLEAN Cause, an Austin-based yerba mate tea company, to help people recovering from addiction by allocating 50% of profits to sober-living scholarships. He said he not only wanted to be an entrepreneur but also have an impact.

Click the link for more information.

Hurt said his addiction started in high school, when he began experimenting with drugs and alcohol. In the span of 20 years, Hurt went to six rehabilitation centers and ended up in a psychiatric hospital. After realizing he was truly hooked, Hurt said he continued postponing the recovery process like a New Year’s resolution.

“That was one of my more difficult realizations about my life,” Hurt said. “I knew there was going to be a long battle back.”

It wasn’t until Hurt was dismissed from his former company, had no money left and lived in a warehouse after his wife kicked him out that he realized he wanted to change.

“CLEAN is the product of that extremism in a healthier way,” Hurt said. “It speaks to something bigger, which was an explicit purpose in life that gave my actions reasons (to fight) for recovery.”

Recovering addict shares her story with local opioid council

The availability of drug addiction treatment centers and the many initiatives led by the government and different organizations have helped many people who are abusing drugs. Although the problem with drugs still exist and the number of users is increasing, if there is one good thing about, it’s the fact that there are many of them who are also trying their best to quit and live a new life. Many of these recovery addicts also share their stories to inspire others.

Recovering addictAt 27, “Hope” found herself serving three years in prison after a stint of abusing prescription drugs and later addiction to heroin. She said she started abusing drugs because of the trauma she experienced as a teenager. Unsure about how to cope, she turned to drugs. “I wasn’t addicted to the drug. I was addicted to the numbing,” she said. “I wasn’t using to feel something. I was using to not feel.”

Click the link to find out more.

The Madison County resident grew up in what she described as a “very loving, Christian home.” She attended a Christian academy and went to college. At 16, she was raped and Hope said she didn’t know how to handle the shame she felt. She said her lack of self-worth led her to stay in a mentally abusive relationship, which created more trauma. She said getting “mixed in with the wrong crowd” also contributed to her abuse of drugs.

Following a car accident, Hope began abusing prescription pills. Two years later, she transitioned into using heroin. While Hope stopped using drugs while she was pregnant, she said her inability to cope with pain led her back to using drugs.

Project Turnabout makes progress in overcoming addiction

So many initiatives have been made possible with a goal of overcoming or ending the problem with drug addiction. Through the years, solving this dilemma has been so challenging. It seems like each year, it is getting worse and the number of people getting affected by it is constantly increasing. Good thing that there are organizations that are trying their best to put an end to this problem. Just like Project Turnabout that is making a lot of progress in overcoming addiction.

Project Turnabout makes progress in overcoming addictionIn 2018, Project Turnabout released a book reflecting on the history of our organization. The motivation for this book was based on the belief that who we are today is founded by those that came before us. We wanted to recognize the staff members who have impacted the organization over the years and decided the names and positions be listed together in no order or hierarchy.

In putting together this history book, information was gathered from past and present Board members, a myriad of people who received our services over the years, and interviews with current and former staff, including the late Bruce Bottge, whose notes were especially helpful. We knew to go in that this was not going to sell a large number of copies – that was not our intention. Our intent was to record and share the paths we have traveled and lessons learned with future staff, Board members, and other interested parties.

What stood out through the creation of this book was the strength of the organization in its ability to stay focused on the mission while continually adapting, improving, growing, and expanding our services. (Special thanks to the Granite Falls, Marshall, Redwood Falls, and Willmar communities over the years who have supported us.) The past year has been one of transition for us and a time to examine how we do things given our growth and size.

Aspen family faces 41 counts related to drugs, underage alcohol

There have been countless times when a person’s life has been put to danger because of drugs. Indeed, the substance can affect one’s life. However, there are also instances when the use of drugs is not entirely because of the person’s will. Perhaps, he just got caught up in a situation. Just like with what happened to Aspen family who hosted parties for high school students where, according to police, cocaine and alcohol were freely provided.

drugs, underage alcoholJoseph Lipsey III, 56, who faces 16 charges, has hired attorneys Yale Galanter of Miami and Richard Cummins of Aspen. Galanter has represented O.J. Simpson and, closer to home, actor Charlie Sheen and his then-wife in Aspen-based cases.

The charges filed, according to deputy district attorney Don Nottingham, are for Lipsey III: one count of distribution of cocaine, 11 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and one count of possession of cocaine, which are all felonies. He also faces three misdemeanor counts of providing alcohol to minors.

His wife, Shira, is charged with cocaine distribution, 11 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and three misdemeanor counts of providing alcohol to minors.

Study finds alcohol and drug treatment may be best served at home

For so many years now, treating alcohol and drug addiction has always been a challenge. The sad thing is, the problem is getting worse each day before one gets solved. So many treatments have become available but only a few have been successful. On the other hand, although treatment is available, not all people who are using drugs are willing to seek help.

alcohol and drug treatmentNow, here is a study that found that alcohol and drug treatment may be best served at home. Offering withdrawal services to certain people struggling with alcohol and other drug addictions in their own home may serve as an acceptable and less expensive treatment option, research led by Curtin University has found.

Click the link to read more.

he paper, published in the Australian Journal of Primary Health today, examined the costs and effectiveness of home-based drug and alcohol detoxification services run by the Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Network (DAWN) in the Perth metropolitan area, based at St John of God Subiaco Hospital and funded through the Mental Health Commission.

Lead author Mr. Cameron Wright, from the School of Public Health at Curtin University, said the research offered valuable information at a crucial time when demand for drug and alcohol treatment services was outstripping the supply of such services across Australia.

No quick solutions to drug problem, ex police chief says

When it comes to the problems that the world is facing right now, one thing is for sure, the drug problem is not going to end sometime soon. This is because it has become so serious that fighting or putting an end to it will not come easy. This is a reality that everyone should acknowledge, yet it should not discourage them from taking steps to solve the problem and save lives. We just have to acknowledge the problem so we can come up with solutions on how to solve it.

drug problemCommunities are being blighted by “misery and harm” caused by drug dealers despite a major sting in north Wales, says former police chief. Clive Wolfendale, who now leads a drugs charity, was speaking after a gang boss was jailed for 10 years last Friday. Aled Gray, 35, was the last among 27 people sentenced after North Wales Police targeted two gangs working in a multi-million pound “consortium”.

Click the link to read the article.

CPS Wales said the operation was a “big step” forward but the fight continued.

Mr Wolfendale, chief executive of CAIS Drug and Alcohol Counselling, said there were no “easy or quick solutions”.

“It is imperative that those who trade in the misery of drug addiction are brought to justice, with the full force of the law,” he said.

“They should be made to pay by all means possible. However, individuals and communities in north Wales continue to be blighted.”
